The Cultural Tourism Report is a monthly newsletter published by the 1000/100 Project, a collaborative project of the Heritage and Cultural Tourism Partnership of North Carolina, the Yadkin-Pee Dee Lakes Project, and the North Carolina Museums Council. The Report focuses on important news affecting cultural tourism – particularly legislative news, policy and best practices.The long-term goal of the 1000/100 Project is to create mutually beneficial working relationships between arts and museums and other cultural and community organizations to develop and enhance cultural tourism in North Carolina. 1000/100 PROJECT SEPTEMBER WORKSHOPS

Todd Morse, President and General Manager of Chimney Rock Park, was the keynote speaker at the September 15th and 16th 1000/100 workshops in Clinton and Lumberton, NC. His topic was Visitor Services and Readiness and he told how he made Chimney Rock Park a leader in customer service, won prestigious customer service awards and increased visitation to the park dramatically. The City of Clinton and the Center for Community Action in Lumberton were the gracious hosts for these workshops. The next workshops will be October 13 and 14 in Wilmington and Fayetteville. Myrick Howard, Preservation NC, will speak on historic preservation and available tax credits. NORTH CAROLINA CELEBRATION OF CRAFT

North Carolina is celebrating its heritage of traditional craft in a 2-year celebration devoted to celebrating and showcasing North Carolina’s craft artists and products.  The North Carolina Craft Coalition, a 19-member collaborative, is the main sponsor of this celebration.  This group came together to promote North Carolina as a tourist destination.  Craft is big business in North Carolina, with 6100 artists, bringing in $538 million into the state each year. aha! (ART, HISTORY AND ARCHITECTURE) IN NEW BEDFORD, MA

On the second Thursday evening of every month the downtown of New Bedford comes alive with various arts and other programming, with a different theme each month.aha! is a collaborative effort of more that 15 New Bedford museums, galleries, arts organizations, merchants, restaurants and the National Historical Park.To read more about this program visit their website at www.ahanewbedford.org.

TEXAS HISTORICAL COMMISSION COMBINES HISTORY AND TOURISM

The Texas Historical Commission, in collaboration with the Texas Department of Transportation, the Texas Department of Economic Development, Texas Parks and Wildlife and the Texas Commission on the Arts, has produced a series of Historical Trail maps that can be used to explore the diverse history and culture of Texas.Read a story about one of these trails at www.statesman.com/travel/content/travel/texas04/23trails.html.

NOMINATIONS ACCEPTED FOR THE DOZEN DISTINCTIVE DESTINATIONS

The National Trust for Historic Preservation is now accepting nominations for the 2005 awards for the Dozen Distinctive Destinations. The deadline is October 29, 2004. LONDON DEVELOPMENT AGENCY PUTS $6.3 MILLION TO NEW INITIATIVE

Even popular destinations like London want to boost their tourism development. The London Development Agency decided to put $6.3 million into a four-year training initiative to increase the customer service skills and raise the standards of providers at the top end of the service market, underlining how important customer service is.For more details, go to www.cnn.com/2004/TRAVEL/09/17/bt.london.charm/index.html.

NC ARTS COUNCIL GRANT PROGRAM

Grants available through the North Carolina Arts Council include funding for Cultural Tourism, Arts in Education, Creating Place: A Community Public Art and Design Initiative, Folklife and Grassroots Arts Program. Cultural Heritage Tourism Resource Manual

Compiled by the National Trust for Historic Preservation for Partners in Tourism, the Cultural Heritage Tourism Resource Manual (PDF) is a directory of more than 40 organizations and agencies that provide funding, technical assistance and other support for cultural heritage tourism projects. When reprinted or distributed, the manual must include the credits for American Express, the National Endowment for the Arts and Partners in Tourism.
