What is the 1000/100 Project?
The 1000/100 Project is a tourism development initiative designed to provide training for, and build partnerships between heritage and cultural tourism related sites and service organizations across North Carolina. The name comes from the program's goal: to train 1000 fellows in North Carolina's 100 counties by the end of the multiyear project. Each year the 1000/100 Project will focus on a geographic area within the state. In 2003, the program focused on a fifteen-county corridor in the central piedmont and in 2004 the focus was on the fifteen-county southeastern coastal region. In 2005 the program will shift emphasis to the middle coastal region. Monthly workshops will focus on tourism issues and concerns specific to the targeted region. The program will incorporate case studies of successful cultural tourism development and marketing within North Carolina and elsewhere that have important applications for the region. The eight workshops will begin May 2005 and will meet one day per month through December 2005.
How does it work?Beginning in May, 2005, the program will provide a monthly series of one-day training workshops for participants in the following counties: Beaufort, Carteret, Craven, Dare, Edgecombe, Greene, Hyde, Johnston, Jones, Lenoir, Martin, Pamlico, Pitt, Tyrell, Washington, Wayne, Wilson. Workshops will include leaders in North Carolina’s natural and cultural resources, hospitality organizations, nonprofits, state and local government, and nationally known speakers in cultural tourism. Workshop topics will include marketing, cultivating community support, building experiences, evaluation and more. The programs are designed to encourage collaborative work between organizations and across county lines to foster sustainable tourism. More about the workshops. How much does it cost?
The program cost is $350, or less than $50 per workshop. Need-based scholarships are available to a limited number of Fellows who may not otherwise be able to participate in the program. To be considered, applicants should complete the scholarship request section on the application form, attach a letter indicating your need for financial assistance and submit this with your application materials. Financial support for the 1000/100 Project has been made available through grant funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), Wachovia Bank, Progress Energy, Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, and the North Carolina Arts Council. How do I apply?Simply fill out the application online or download a copy of the application and send it in.
